For centuries, people of the Middle East have turned a deaf ear to the Good News of Jesus Christ. This is a region that has seen one cruel conqueror after another dominate and oppress its people. From the Romans to the Ottomans it has been a parade of misery through the centuries, making the people suspicious of governmental authority. Here governments come and go, but the tribe remains. One Lebanese historian noted, "if you want to know the history of Lebanon and Syria, read the newspaper." These countries were born out of the political bureaucracy of European superpowers of the 20th century
Modern day governments spend most of their energy on keeping power and demolishing their opposition, which has led to what is known as the "Arab Spring." Tyrants are being traded in for new ones, with the spoils of war being spread throughout the sphere. Iraq and Syria have devolved into a battle fields. The misery continues on and on.
In 2013 we sensed something snap in the cultural psyche of Syrians. This is something that is not unique to Syrians, it can be clearly seen throughout the Arab world, there is change. We believe this is a special time in which God is putting the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on display for all to see. The power of His love over war and hatred, of hope in Him over despair, and the power of faith in Him. There is a real and powerful transformation underway in the Middle East.
